Frequently Asked Questions
If my venue signs up, what exactly are we committing to?
You commit to embedding the Serving with CARE principles into your daily operations and team culture. This includes training staff, promoting responsible service, and maintaining the standards outlined in the initiative. The Serving with CARE principles are highlighted here. Participation is based on a good-faith self-declaration.
What is the difference between core and advanced participation?
Core participation includes the essential principles every venue needs to follow to join Serving with CARE. Advanced participation includes additional commitments for venues that want to go further, such as community collaboration and team recognition.
Do I need to already meet all the principles to apply?
You should already have the key practices in place or be ready to implement them as you join Serving with CARE. The application requires you to confirm your commitment and give a short description of how the principles are applied in your venue. Serving with CARE recognises that every hospitality venue is different. This is why the principles are designed to give venues a lot of flexibility in how to implement them.
Who can join the initiative?
All hospitality venues are welcome. Restaurants, bars, hotels, clubs, hospitality groups can all participate. Industry associations in the hospitality sector are also welcome to support and amplify the initiative with their members.
Can hospitality groups apply for multiple venues?
Yes. Hospitality groups can apply on behalf of a part or the totality of their venue portfolio.
How do I apply?
You complete a short online form with your business details, select your participation level, confirm each principle, and provide brief descriptions of your responsible serving practices.
Who needs to sign the application?
An authorized signatory, typically the owner or general manager, needs to complete the declaration.
What happens after I join?
Your application will be reviewed and approved. Once confirmed, you’ll be able to access to program assets and guidance, and have your venue listed as a participant.
Is this a regulatory program or inspection scheme?
No. This is a voluntary initiative. Participation is based on a good-faith self-declaration. It does not replace legal requirements or create regulatory enforcement.
What happens if a venue does not meet the principles?
If any concern is being raised about a participating venue, it will be reviewed and addressed in collaboration with the venue. This may involve further guidance and corrective actions to get back in line with the principles. In some cases, a decision to temporary suspend or permanently remove a venue from the initiative may be taken if issues are not resolved within a reasonable timeframe.
How will customers know we are part of the initiative?
Once your participation is confirmed, you will receive a Serving with CARE pack with branded materials. You can display the official program mark in your venue and across your digital channels. Participating venues will also get a mention on the Serving with CARE website.
Can I use the program logo and assets?
Yes. Participating venues are encouraged to use and share the official logo and provided materials in their venue and on their digital channels.
Do I need specific training programs in place?
To join Serving with CARE, all alcohol-serving staff must be trained in responsible alcohol service. This can include recognized or mandatory hospitality training programs in some states, or internal training conducted by the company.
Can I join if I am still improving some areas?
Yes, as long as you are committed to meeting the principles and actively working to implement them. The initiative is designed to support continuous improvement.
Can I withdraw from the initiative?
Yes. You can withdraw at any time. You will need to stop using the program name and assets once you leave.
Is there a cost to participate?
No. Participation is free.
Are there any contractual obligations?
No. Participation is voluntary and based on a declaration of commitment, not a binding contract or certification.
